Abstract: This report aims to show the practical application of the 15^th–16^th century Ottoman registers (icmal and mufassal tapu tahrir defters) as a source for regional studies, with the variability of research opportunities they provide. The focus of the research is on the fate of the medieval city of Cherven in the conditions of a new political and religious power. Using the mentioned register material, the administrative changes that took place in the status of the settlement after its incorporation into the Ottoman state and during the next two centuries are traced. An important emphasis on the overall analysis is occupied by the issues related to the demographic and confessional processes and changes that the settlement is experiencing. The anthroponomy of the population is the other main and interesting feature of the population, the foundations of which we lay in the present material. The results of research on anthroponomy are a clear sign of the religiosity of the population and the public atmosphere. The movement of the population – both demographically and territorially – is an important indicator of ongoing processes, the results of which concern both the number of the population and its economic development and stability. In this connection, the questions about the reasons and prerequisites that led to fateful changes in the place and importance of Cherven within the Ottoman Empire will be raised.
