Abstract: Christian apology was born in the context of an environment hostile to Christianity when it was an illegal and at certain times persecuted religion. The ancient apologists, who represent some of the most educated believers, set out to dispel existing misconceptions about Christianity – among them accusations of unreasonableness. This article aims to investigate the emphasis that authors such as St. Justin, Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Minucius Felix, and Origen, place on the necessity of using the rational faculty, and to clarify their views on the compatibility between Christianity and human reason.
