Abstract: Emperor Theodosius I legislation outlawed the Arian doctrine as heresy at the end of the 4th century but its followers among the Gothic communities in the Balkans persisted with their practices during the 5th century. The presented article aims to present the religious beliefs of Gainas, senior military officer (magister militum) of Gothic origin, and to determine his affiliation with one of the Arian movements. The study is based on the letters of st. Nilus of Sinai addressed to Gainas. Analyzed in comparison with other narrative sources from the 4th and 5th centuries the letters reveal Gainas propensity to different Christian doctrines and even some pagan practices.
